On May 18th in Zurich, Numismatica Ars Classica will sell the Lambeth Bridge Collection of Roman Republican coins. This is the collection of my good friend Andrew McCabe and the sale is full of wonderful coins with excellent, well researched provenances and notes and spans the entire breadth of Roman Republic coinage from early cast bronze to the final issues of the Imperatorial period.
This sale is a particularly special and bittersweet one for me because Andrew was one of the first Roman Republic collectors I met after deciding I wanted to focus on this area of coinage. I reached out to him for the first time close to a decade ago, asking about an interesting bronze I picked up. He responded with a number of helpful comments on it and we’ve been in regular communication ever since and even wrote a paper together on overstrikes a few years ago. I’ve also always looked forward to Andrew’s regular sales of cast offs at CNG, Roma and even FORVM retail early on which even today form the core of my collection with something like 10% of my coins being ex-McCabe including a number of my most favorite.
This sale is truly a treat to browse if you’re at all interested in the coinage even if you don’t plan to bid. In addition Andrew has assembled a book which documents the provenances and ephemera associated with the coins in the sale and you can find the PDF at this link. Again it’s a real treat to browse to look at the coins and tags and things even if you’re not bidding and it just shows how much work and love went into building this truly special collection.
